How to Get Your Kid Interested in Music

Music is one of the most enriching aspects of anyone's life, whether you are an adult or a child. As young children and toddlers, mothers and fathers sing songs to them, and as they grow up, they learn some basic fundamental learning tools through song, such as the alphabet or counting. As they grow up, they may become very excited about music, or want to shy away from it, especially when it comes to playing an actual musical instrument. If you're interested in having your child take up a musical instrument, here are some ways to get your child interested in music.

1. Listen to music every day - It could be your favorite music, children's songs, or whatever is on the radio. But playing music when they're in the bath, getting dressed, or even at dinner will help them become interested in how important of a role it can play in their lives.

2. Take your child to a concert. Classical music may be boring to some people, but starting your child early in classical music (even playing it around the house) will help them gain an interest in one of the many orchestral instruments.

3. Find a genre of music that appeals to them. If you find they like reggae or jazz, play that around the house and introduce them to specific instruments that are a part of that particular type of music. They may want to learn to play it themselves as they get older.

4. Be broad about the type of music they listen to. Introduce them to world music, pop, jazz, rock, hip hop, classical, country, techno, folk music, sea shanties, and see what music they cling to the most.

5. Make musical instruments. A cigar box guitar, a drum out of an old paint container, or a harmonica out of a comb and tissue paper is a great way for them to be introduced to making music, not just listening to it.

There are plenty of other suggestions to get your child into music. If they are not quite at elementary school age, you may want to consider speaking with a music teacher to see what else you can do to allow your child to explore the beautiful and artistic world of music.
