Constitution Day - Teaching Lower Austria elementary students to use technology to the Constitution

Every autumn, when school starts again, we are now with us to teach the Constitution to celebrate Constitution Day. The idea of celebrating a document is a bit 'difficult for lower elementary students.

So how can we help young children understand the impact of the Constitution and also to celebrate the day?

I will start with talk of when the pilgrims came to America and why. We discuss a country, under George Washington as our first President. These are concepts that may have heard before. Next I address the idea of school rules and how important the school to continue to flow with ease. I suggest that a country would also have rules to keep the peace. With older students (up to class 3, I read "The U.S. Constitution" by Pearl Norman), which is very basics of the Constitution.

With the kindergarten through second grade, beginning with the youngest students recite the pledgefidelity. I wonder if there are words that do not understand this promise? Perhaps words like promise, loyalty, justice, freedom, indivisible? I read "I Pledge Allegiance by Bill Martin Jr. This book is a good job defining the promise and I also skip some of the fine print.

Finally, I want to show the children how to draw you a flag with a drawing program on your computer. I am using KidPix. We look at a flag to find out how many strips are and what colors are on the top andEnd of the flag. We use the rectangle tool to draw the red stripes (like the line tool is not quite thick enough.) Add a blue rectangle in the upper left. About 50 stars, or mark the spot white.

In kindergarten, we give our names on the flag. In the first class you write: "I am proud to be an American" and our name. In the second class, you add a reason why we are proud to be Americans. From the third and fourth classes, we have several reasons why we are proud to be aAmericans.

After printing, the banners with the color, I staple each a piece of red or blue construction paper and sends them back to class for a bulletin board display will be for the month of September!

What a great way to start the year! Constitution Day is not a painful experience to celebrate with young people. More painful is when I give the school to sing the rock version of the preamble! (Also make sure if you need another lesson to celebrate the ConstitutionDay!)

Play sing the song together and see the flags of the class did!
